A: Permits can be dropped off to the Construction Department Monday - Friday or mailed to the Municipal Building with attention to the Construction Department. Please be advised that we cannot accept incomplete applications. All information on applications should be clear, legible, and written in ink.

A: One Construction Permit Application Folder and 2 copies of Construction plans.

A: Please have your permit number ready, then you may either call the office or stop into schedule inspections. Either the owner or the contractor may schedule. All permit paperwork must be onsite for inspection.

A: Payments can be made in the office Monday - Friday 8AM - 3:30PM. We accept check or cash in the exact amount. Checks should be made payable to Borough of Watchung.

A: For the resale of a residential property, the Building Department does not issue a Certificate of Occupancy. You must contact the Fire Safety Department to schedule a Smoke Detector Certification inspection.

A: For a single family home that is owner occupied, the homeowner may perform the work in most cases. If you are hiring a contractor they must be licensed in the state of New Jersey. Please be advised, there are certain types of work that a homeowner cannot perform such as an air conditioning install or replacement. If you reside in a condo, the homeowner is not permitted to perform the work and must hire a licensed contractor.

A: All final inspections must be passed or the permit will remain open. If it is applicable to your permit, prior approvals, such as Land Disturbance Permit from Engineering, must also be obtained. If there are open permits from a previous owner, the current owner is the one responsible for closing the permit, regardless of who did the work.
